Peanut is right. Wild adult salmon are predators, living in the sea and eating mainly other fish. When very young, living in rivers, they eat smaller things such as insects and shrimps.
Adult salmon return to rivers to spawn, but don't eat much at all while they do this (you can still catch them with a hook, not because they are hungry but because they can't help snapping at small fish-like things dragged past their noses).
Farmed salmon eat pelleted food made from minced fish, which are caught in the sea indiscriminately.
