My 8 year old male cat has lost a lot of fur on the inside of his rear legs and his belly. He does not appear to be bothered by it and is not scratching any more than usual.
The vet has looked at him and has ruled out fleas. He suggested that he may be stressed and suggested that a new cat in the area could be the cause? He gave him a steroid injection but nothinh appears to have changed. The initial fur has started to gorw back but he still appears to be losing more. The vet suggested that the next step could be valium which seems bizarre for a cat?

Maybe its a skin problem or something like that. It seems weird that the vet wouldn't notice this though...

I know this will sound weird as well but try bathing him in eucalyptus oil and lavender oil with some hot water. I tried this with my guinea pig when it had mange and it worked well.

Hope your cat gets better. :)
Our cat Snowy is older but he has shown the same symptoms. The vet could find nothing wrong and just put it down to age. There may of course have been a competitor in the area which worried him. However, his fur has now come back. So if investigations have revealed nothing just keep an eye out for him but I am sure he will be ok.
i had a similar thing with my horse i mixed tea tree ,lavendar ,citronella and peppermint oil with baby oil and rubbed on to him twice a day all his hair has grown back i used a teaspoon of each oil mixed in to a bottle of baby oil
One of our dogs developed this, in exactly the same places as your cat. As a user of herbal and natural remedies, I was tempted to bathe the areas in something like aloe vera, but our vet said just to leave it, in case the animal scratched the area and the preparations stung.
The hair grew back slightly, but not overly so, so we've just left it, and put it down to the dog geting older. She's now 7, and has had this thing for about 2 years. It doesn't bother her at all, and she's an otherwise very healthy dog with a shiny coat.
We have two 8 year old cats that are brothers. One,Jasper, has pulled his fur out for most of his life and has been prescribed Valium and Ovarid in the past.I give him his meds in the winter when it gets really bad,but in the summer he seems calmer because we have got Catnip growing in the garden. The other thing to try is a diffuser /spray that you can get from your vet/supplier called Feliway-its some sort of cat pheromone preparation
