Hi guyd sng gsld me and my girlfriend are getting a new puppy soon. We both work shift work and it will be left up to 10 hours a day 6 days per week. Would it be a good idea getting someone to come round and check on it? We are so excited.

IF this is serious (which I hope it isnt) then please please do not get a dog. An animal lover would not leave a dog in a cage for 10 hours a day. If I knew who and where you are I would immediately report you to the RSPCA. If you do go ahead with such a ridiculous idea then I hope your neighbours / family have the sense to report you.

I agree twinkle! I hope this is a wind up, which i guess it is. However - still waiting to hear from peewee - then RSPCA?? I'm guessing that there will be no more contact, and no contact details!!!!
It may not be a wind up - remember this question a while back?

Sadly it does happen - I still think of that poor two year old boxer in a cage for 9 hours a day, especially in this weather!

I don't know why some people bother getting dogs when they clearly don't have enough time on their hands to look after them
A good dog is a gods send. I know, I am unable to work due to ill health and my wife works full time. Up until a few months ago my kids were at home and I saw them at odd times during the day and we could have the occassional chat but when they left home I came close to going off my swede being alone all day. I got a fantastic young dog from the RSPCA that had been off loaded because it was said that it had behavioural problems (have yet to see any sign of this)The dog is fantastic company and whilst we can't sit down and discuss the state of the world etc, I know she's there and we do get to go out and about and she's a comfort to me when I'm down. I know how I felt being alone all day and I wouldn't wish that on a poor dog - let alone having to spend that time in a cage.
Surely a wind up.
Hi alfie how's your pup? xx
get a cat !
No don't get a cat please. They need attention too. Don't get anything. You are not fit to look after an animal.
This is obviously a wind up.

A WIND UP!!!!!!!

I have just got back from the pet shop. Got a few little toys for Brutus to play with. I reackon he can play with 1 toy for 2 hours so I got 5 toys. With those and my neigour having a quick look through the window to make sure he is alright then I think he will be fine. I was thinking about leaving the radio on too?

We really cant wait for little Brutus to come :)
lol

Unfortunately, some people would probably think this sort of behaviour is acceptable. That's the scary part.

peewee, why do you want a dog when you will not be with it for the majority of the time, the neighbours will feed it, and you'll get someone else to feed it? can't you just sponsor an animal or something?

having a puppy is much like having a child. they need constant entertaining, love and affection. not to mention room to move around. would it be ok to keep a toddler in a cage 10hours a day?

toys alone will not entertain the dog. you have to interact with the dog to make the toy fun.

if you feel there is nothing wrong with your plans then why not discuss this with the RSPCA and they can verify what you are doing is the right course of action?
sorry i meant you'll get someone else to walk it. x
MiniN - It's a wind up thread.
squarebear, how do you know?

surely there are stupid people in the world who think these things are ok otherwise there would be no need for the RSPCA and similar animal charities.
my husband and i are desperate to get a dog after he lost his family pet earlier this year, and i lost mine last year. we both both work 9-5 monday to friday and have busy social lives and made the horrible (but inevitable) decision that we just cannot do it.

i know you're excited, and you feel its too late to go back, but perhaps you'd be better with a cat - they don't rely on human contact in the way that a dog does, and they come and go as they please.

please please re think, it might be heart breaking to know you can never have one, but do you really want the poor thing pining for you all day, 6 days a week?
Also I hope you realise that a young puppy needs 4 small meals a day and needs to be taken out after each meal, who's going to do that? I really hope that this is a wind up, I shall be worried from the 22nd thinking about the poor little pup being taken away from it's mum and siblings and stuck in a crate for 9 hrs. OMG
