I have some nice flatware that I have traditionally only used for special occasions. I would like to start using it for everyday. It is 18/10 stainless with gold accents. I really don't want ot have to hand wash it. Is it necessary to do so to keep the gold from wearing?
Oh, by the way, I have a water treatment system, so my water is very soft (& therefore has a higher salt content).

It isn't the salt ions in the softened water you need to worry out - it is the agressive dishwasher powder. Because dishwashers don't have the advantage of the mechanical action of hands to help remove dirt but they also don't have to worry about the effect of the powder on the skin, what is used is far stronger.
I think that you will lose the accents. A surer way would be to try it on one piece in the dishwasher for several times and see what happens.
