How do squirrels find their nuts again, once they have hid them? Is it by smell or memory?

combination of both. that's just a guess though.
They actually have very bad memories and usually hit on them again when they dig up a 'new' spot for storage only to find they've used it before.
They put their hands down their pants.

But seriously, the use of smell will be very improtant, also the use of landmarks, or perhaps least likely, relying on a good memory.
However, it is now thought that they hide so many nuts without the intention of finding them again, instead to attempt to grow more trees. Quite clever for a Squirrel really.
