Help ID caterpillar

I live in southern Michigan. On the concrete near my garage, I found a fuzzy black caterpillar on November 17. I would not expect a caterpillar to be alive here this time of year, but this one was. I have never seen a caterpillar like this either. It has black fuzz and red skin. It is about three inches when moving about and can contract itself into about 1 inch when harried. I was wondering if anyone could help ID this critter for me.
