Bee's attracted to freshly dug earth ?

I have recently dug some new vegetable strips in my garden and noticed that many bee's swarm around and get right down into the newly dug soil, this part of the garden has not been dug for about 20 years and was grassed - any ideas why ?

\It could be that if it has not been disturbed for a long time that they have a nest in your soil,this does happen if they have a breakaway group from a hive.
