Hi, my husband and I are getting 2 Cavalier King Charles puppies in a couple of weeks and we're wondering which is the best way to train them to go to the toilet outside? I know there are puppy training pads we could use but do these work? Thanks

My personal preference is to get up every hour or so, sometimes less if the puppy/ies have been playing or asleep and take them outside. Its a whole lot of work, but do you ever want a dog to think its ok to pee in the house, even on paper? YUCK!!!

I have 3 dogs all of which were trained in the same way, us making the effort and taking them outside regardless of time of day or night to make sure that they know that outside is the place to go to the loo.

Put the puppies on leads os that you can keep an eye on them whilst outside and use a trigger word/s such as 'quickly' for a wee and 'hurry up' for a poo, that way as they grow up and you are letting them out befor you go out of the house for the day or whatever they associate the words with what they need to do.

Also please don't rub their faces in any accidents they might have in the house. Its not nice and they didn't do it deliberately, blame yourselves for not being attentive enough!!

Thats my advice, hope you find something that works for you

And make sure you make a big fuss when they do a wee or whatever outside. Make out it's the best thing they've ever done in their whole lives, and you are sooooo excited about it.

If you catch them peeing in the house (and ONLY if you catch them actually doing it - a second later is too late), then you can say "NO", and take them straight outside to carry on. Then praise them when they do the right thing.

And then be cross with yourself because you should have noticed them needing to go out before the accident happened.

Good luck!!

Thank you very much for your replies, I will take them outside every hour or so or after every nap, playtime, feed etc and see how it goes. I would never rub the pups face in their accidents, we wouldnt do it to babies so why animals!! Thanks again x

Go to "Behavior" and read Potty training, it will give you lots of info on how, why and such to help in potty training a pup. Good luck. And don't foget after a couple of weeks start to separate them, so they don't become dependent on each other, they need to bond to you...that's where training comes in. Check it out.
