SSPCA have a number of centres:

This other site also seems to give details of SSPCA ones and independently run rescue centres.

Good on for you for wanting a rescue dog and good luck. Just be aware that although these centres will not charge you for the dog, you will probably be expected to (and hopefully will want to) give a donation to help them cover their costs and continue their work.

you could also try NCDL (National Canine Defence League).
Dogs Trust (used to be NCDL) have rehoming centres in Glasgow and West Calder.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home at Seafield would also welcome you for a visit. They request donations as do all re-homing centres - but it is certainly a better route than paying for show dogs if you are looking for a decent pet dog for the home.

A rescue centre will also confirm that the animal is suitable for what you are looking for in terms of temperament etc, and also that it is a healthy animal.
