I was on Epsom Down for the racing last year and walking back up to the car through the long grass we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of a swarm of flying bugs. They seemed to come up from the grass and were quite large green insects, about the size of bumble bees. Neither I nor my partner had seen anything like them before, and I thought they were quite cute once we realised they didn't sting or bite. Does anyone know what they are? They seem to come out in May and June especially.

Could be a type of cockchafer often called a May Bug or a June Bug. Try google images and see if they match.
