I hate moths. Love butterflies, but moths scare me.
Wonder why moths are given such a raw deal. Scrolling through those pics, one cannot help but notice that, whereas flutterbyes get all the bright colours and beautiful markings, the poor old moth has to make do with drab greys and browns and, sometimes, quite spooky markings. Poor sods.
And the one that does have a bit of colour (the red and yellow one) looks as if it has the face of the Grinch on the back of it's head.
Seem like a bob howler is just a Brummie name for any large hairy moth. Not one particular species.

I think the only one I've seen down this way is one of the elephant moths. That pink is hard to miss.
I have a board on my Pinterest account for weird bugs...there's a good number of pictures of huge moths in there!
Hummingbird hawkmoths are beautiful.
Get them here in the summer. Usually on the valerian flowers.
Similar, pasta. How dare you, retro! Warley Woods is not in Birmingham, but you're right, big moths are called bob howlers in Birmingham and the Black Country
