I saw a bumblebee fly into a hole in the ground. I think the hole was excavated originally by a vole/s.
Do the bees ever make their own nests or do they just take on disused nests made by something else

Bumble Bees do not build nests. They look for suitable to colonise. Bee boxes help. I have 2 in my garden. I had a huge red tail bumble bee flying round my house last week. I just trapped her and put her outside. Don't kill bumble bees please! They are very unlikely to sting. More info here: https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/bumblebee-nests/

The one that I saw was the red tail variety.
The last thing I want to do is kill them, in fact I want to do all I can to encourage them, as they play a major part in pollination.

Bees are a tad like frogs.
When they die you know your environment is ***.
Happy days to all..
