We have a very local, very lovely lady who looks after our dog in her own home whenever we need her too, if she isn’t already booked up.
He sleeps on her bed (he’s not even allowed upstairs in our house)is taken for lots of walks, and is generally spoilt to bits by her, he absolutely loves her and greets her like one of the family.
She will take two dogs at a time, three at a push if they all get on. There are a couple of dogs who have to be looked after by themselves due to being rather unsociable.
We much prefer her set up to the kennels we’ve had to use occasionally in the past, even though the kennels get very good reviews and we’ve been confident he’ll be well looked after and safe there.
What do you do with your dog during holiday or other times when he needs to be looked after elsewhere?

Piggynose is just asking a question...I'm sure dogs and other pets can be many things to many people. There's no harm in asking, is there?
Piggynose, you obviously don't have a dog! We have had dogs most of our life and a child as well. No gaps to be filled. Our dogs have all been part of a happy family unit. And children that grow up with dogs or other pets are known to be very balanced caring people in most cases. Quite honestly, if people don't relate to dogs or other animals they are people I generally don't relate too or need around me.
I knew this thread would develop as it has. I believe there are many very caring and responsible dog owners who occasionally have to put their much loved dogs with sitters or in kennels but probably wouldn't dare say so now!
Very happy with my response, thank you pasta.
I owned up!

Interesting views.
Unfortunately we don’t have any family nearby to leave our dog with, and there’s only one friend locally who has a dog but I would only ask them in an emergency.
Because of our family situation, and prior to COVID, we regularly flew abroad to visit an offspring, so obviously couldn’t take dog with us so kennels and/or dog minder was a necessity.
Other offspring live the length and breadth of the country and only two of the four of them could have dog and us stay there with them.
We got our latest dog due to some unhappy personal circumstances and felt it would be good for us to focus on something else, and give us a reason to get out and about. He’s certainly done that, he’s had such a positive influence on our lives, brought us a lot of joy, and puts a smile on our faces every day.
Of course people sometimes have to leave their dogs. Nobody has indicated otherwise.
This is for my own interest - some of the posters manage to take their dogs away maybe for a day or 3. Can any of you tell me where I can take Maxie here in Northern Ireland for a wee weekend. thanks
Why does it have to be in NI? You can go down south as well.
jj. If you Google 'dog friendly accommodation in Northern Ireland' you will find places that take dogs.
We pretty much have always taken ours with us. The only exception is haven, where it is so child-based, the dogs would have ended up in a caravan for most of the time, so my mum or a friend has stayed at mine with them... but I do miss them. Haven't been away without them for many years now.
To answer piggynose... maybe a child substitute for me. My 4 have all grown up and I now have 4 dogs who I treat as my babies now instead.

When we go away in this country, to a cottage or something, we always take dog with us, there are loads of dog friendly places.
My cousins wife also has a list of dog friendly hotels as they prefer to stay in hotels due to medical needs, and take their two dogs with them. Not sure I’d want to do that though.
We have stayed in several dog friendly small hotels and inns with great success over the last ten years. If you have a well behaved dog, I would recommend it. We never leave the dog in our room alone and most have seating arrangements that your dog can be with you at breakfast and evening meals. We have made a lot of friends doing this and have spent some grest evenings in hotel bars. Several of them have even brought in sausages for the dog's at breakfast time! I prefer hotels and inns now because it's a great rest. We used to caravan, then went on to self catering. Now hotels.
Mine go to kennels where they have a video so we can see them

Maybe it’s something we need to re think then apc, having dismissed it out of hand, actually sounds like a very enjoyable experience.
Give it a try Vagus, you've nowt to lose and everything to gain:-))
This thread has gone to the dogs.
Dogone.
Thats like a dogs dinner.
She's a ***.
Dog eared.
Has anybody got any more dog expressions?
"Of course people sometimes have to leave their dogs. Nobody has indicated otherwise." Apc not in the slightest wanting to get involved in a spat but apart from Tilly I read the whole of the first page as people who wouldn't go anywhere if they can't take their dog with them.
Whoops. I should've said a girly dog is called a bit**
Vagus, do try itThe last hotel we stayed in the north York coast had more dogs in the bar in the evenings than humans. It was such as laugh! We have found in general that people with dogs stop and talk to each other wherever we go.
