Would You Stop For A Stray Dog?

I've just got back late from lunch because of 'stray' white staffie was running around in the (busy!) road, causing cars to stop and swerve. No one but me stopped to get out of their car to calm the dog down and try and find its owner.

I pulled over, hopped out the car and ran up to where it was - at this point running into the roundabout. I got down on my knees, held out my hands and called him over. He ran over, and rolled over to let me tickle his tummy so I tied my scarf around his neck. We got back to my car, where he hopped in nicely. I called the local vet and nipped over to see if he was chipped. He was, and half an hour later his owners came rushing into the vets to get him - in tears!

What bothers me is that no one else stopped?! This dog was clearly a bit frightened, overwhelmed and excited. He was healthy looking and friendly. To not have stopped would have potentially caused a car accident or worse, hurt or killed the dog. Stopping to me seemed completely natural, I didn't think once he might be 'dangerous' and it was fairly obvious he'd recently escaped from his home. Turns out the postman had left the gate open.

Would you have stopped? Casper is now safely reunited with his humans because I did.

We used to have a dog who was an escape expert, he would go off on an adventure. People would sometimes bring him home which was pretty brave of them as he was about nine stone. People are kind where animals are concerned.
This was the case of a child Anthro, I'm sorry to say the dog did not survive.

TWR that's just awful. A terrible situation but you made the right call.
Good on you, Anthro....so easy just to look the other way isn't it...

I've never been in that situation but my son stopped on a motorway to rescue a terrified dog....
No owner could be found so he ended up asking his girlfriend's parents to take in the dog......
They did and were never sorry.....even when, on the first Christmas he was looking out of the window and a firework went off....
Doggie took fright.....dashed through the Christmas tree.... got caught in the lights and completely striped the tree..... :-)
Dog and owners had a long and happy relationship......my son and girlfriend didn't.....which was a shame....she was so much nicer than....hmmmmm....better stop there.... ;-)

Again....nice thing you did....xxx
I would of hit the child before the dog!
joke!!!
Before anyone jumps down my throat!!
islay. I Would HAVE.
Years ago, I remember seeing two people running down the hard shoulder of a motorway after two dogs that had obviously escapes from the car... I still wonder what happened to them... :-(

Ah Spath, Tom Hardy is ahero when it coming to dogs
Gness, a very ( With Respect ) brave/ silly situation, it's bad enough having a brake down on a Motorway, just a point on your post, would / could have lost his life or got badly injured, could have been booked by the police, if they would have appeared they would have told him to use the Emergency Phone, or contacted the police. xxxx
I'm not entirely sure I would have stopped for a dog. I am not confident with dogs I do not know. That could make matters worse since animals are quite intuitive.

I would however stop for a cat, a horse, a sheep, a chicken, a cow - all of which I have more confidence with.
I stopped and caught a loose horse once. The police officer was relieved as she didn't know what to did with it.
She disappeared and left me to it!
I did too, Pixie. Horses I can deal with. Dogs I'm not so sure of.

I suppose its what you are used to.
Yes- dogs can be more unpredictable, if you don't know them.
But, TWR.....he's not daft.......he took no risks......he stopped and picked up a dog that could have caused a dreadful pile-up......
He assessed the situation and, knowing him, took the best course of action in the circumstances.....
He's neither silly nor brave......just, like his ma, very sensible.... ;-)
I once held up traffic whilst I rescued a frog! The whitevanman behind me was pissing himself laughing but got out in the end to help!!
Well horses can be jolly unpredictable too, but I'm just more confident dealing with an unpredictable nag. I guess I was brought up with horses but not really with dogs.
//just, like his ma, very sensible//

Is he also delusional?
