Are Some Dog Foods Worse Than Others At Causing A Dog To Smell?

I know all dogs smell but my latest rescue dog really whiffs. The smell seems to seep out of his skin and I can only assume that it's the food I feed him. It is the usual doggy smell but very strong. And I'm wondering if changing to fresh raw chicken etc might alleviate it. At the moment he has Nature's Diet soft food, just a slice, mixed with James Wellbeloved Fish & Rice Complete, not the most expensive but far from the cheapest either, like say Orijen. He's a JR/CorgiX.

I don't want to use air freshener, I want to stop the cause, if possible. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

If Ratter's about I'd be interested to know his experience regarding the above and what exactly he feeds his Wolfies.

//I know all dogs smell//

Do you really?, I seem to have missed out on that fact, must be getting the food wrong, silly me!
Maybe change the fish and ricer to either lamb or Turkey and rice.
Mr Harv never smelt unless he passed wind. Also many people have said to me there was no doggy smell in my house which was good enough for me.

Towards the end Mr Harv really loved the dried and wet food Orlando brand.

I mixed with it with a little chicken and carrots and no - no smell.
My dogs like that just now, he's been on the same food for years, so I thought it's just because he is getting old. He smells worse after he's been playing. Doggy BO I think.
LB, why are you putting in the soft food with the complete food? He doesn't need both. Maybe that's why he smells.
How long have you had him? If the food fed previously has caused the smell, it can take a while, maybe a week, to get rid of the smell. BTW Baldric, all dogs smell, all people smell, just about every living thing has its own smell!
My lurcher sally has little doggy odor...I also give her either Natures Diet or Forthglade...mixed with Burnes lamb and rice plus some raw mince.

I don't deny that wolf, but we get the same reaction as jj, that our house does not smell of dogs, or cat for that matter, we must be doing something right along the line!

Woof, not wolf! ^^^^
We had a rescue greyhound which came with the dog smell in spades. Several shampoos and a Burns Chicken and Rice diet sorted him.
Sounds like a car-wash is needed!

Hang on I said the dog smells NOT my home! I wash everything he lies on, cushion covers, chair and sofa covers, his dog bed and covers, his coats, even his leads and collars. I put a massive effort into making sure it doesn't smell, in fact it is all this work that has made me have a rethink and try and stop the smell at source. I've had dogs all my life, old dogs as well, as the current one is, and not one smelled half as strongly as him.
Baldric it's plain to see I am asking for help. Why the sarcasm and without even answering the question as well?
Pasta I do alternate the flavours of dry food and can't say I've noticed any difference.
Tilly I give him a slice of Nature's diet because when he arrived from rescue he wouldn't eat his dry food at all. Nothing for 4 days so I got the ND to tempt him and it worked, mixed with the dry food. And he loves it so I've kept on with it. I've fed it to other of my dogs and they didn't smell like him although I suppose different dogs react differently. But I'll think about what you've said, thanks. I've had him for nearly a year woof.
Seadogg he gets bathed when he's dirty and within an hour the smell is back I'm afraid.
DTC I don't understand your post.
a smell like that can be a symptom of a skin infection. have you asked the vet?
Question Author
Piper as I said in my OP, I want to stop the cause of the smell, not mask it. And he is bathed regularly and the smell is back almost immediately after.
Has he got anal gland problems?

Ok, Bakers Senior Complete (dried food) + scraps.
Don't recall saying your house did smell, just our doesn't, don't be so sensitive!
Could be either a skin infection, or an ear infection (ear infections can smell horrendous). Get him checked by the vet pronto.
