In the lane where we live, we regularly see pheasants. Since the heavy rain we have noticed a large bird which, in outline, looks like an adult pheasant, but it is jet black with a red head.
Does anyone know what it might be?
I say since the heavy rains because since then we have had large ducks appearing in the garden that seem to be a bit lost!

Black pheasants are not unknown. Visiting Glen Isla we came across a whole group of them by the roadside. Easy to distinguish from grouse, which have short tails compared to the long tails of pheasnts...

Thanks both for taking the time to help me! It's too big to be a grouse, but the link to the RSPB site looks to have the fellow in the first photograph, so it seems to be a black pheasant. You're never too old to learn something new, thanks again.
I've occasionally seen black ones on my travels, if its sunny they sometimes appear a dark bottle green iridescence, if you can get close enough
