Like every other fruit you mean, that is natures way of providing the correct environment for the enclosed seed to germinate. Remember it isn't ripening for us to eat it, ripening is just a stage of the flesh rotting for the benefit of the seed.

I read somewhere that the only fruit which does not continue to ripen after picking is the pineapple. But that is the oddest sort of fruit, when you come to think about it. Some fruit, like bananas and avocados must be picked very unripe or they will not reach their destination without damage.
