We have lots and lots of spiders in our garden and unfortunately they're a pain.  we have a lean too outside the back door and the webs are everywhere.  We do have lots of birds but they don't seem to eat them.  I do clear them with a broom but must admit I'm a bit squeemish. Is there anything else we could do?

Why do you want to get rid of them? Think of what would be there in their place if the spiders were not eating them! We do enough damage to nature so live and let live...or be eaten!!
I was going to say the same. How would you like to be swept  away and your home destroyed?

I am absolutely terrified of spiders, but would never hurt them.

Sweeping them up with a broom could hurt them & their babies, so perhaps you could buy one of those vacuum thingy's & release them out into the garden. Good luck!
