i know, pasta. i read that article and believe it is probably true. on the few occasions i have called the rspca, i have to say i found them useless and uncaring. more local charities, on the other hand, are much more accommodating and useful. shame on the rspca.

If other charities can do more to save the animals they rescue-why can't the RSPCA? Too big, I guess.
Even if the figures are less,it's still too many.
But if they didn't euthanise all those animals, where would the money come from to give their chairmen (and women) their astronomical salaries?
support your local animal charities as well as dogs trust and cats protection..etc if people vote with their donations they may change their policy
And that's why I personally thought it was disgraceful of them to spend £250K prosecuting a hunt (another thread). I will never give to the RSPCA even though as a child I thought they were angels.
This is the Mail's backlash to the RSPCA's prosecution of the fox hunters.
As this method of hunting is illegal, why did the RSPCA have to bring a private prosecution costing them well over £300,000 whilst the authorities chose to do nothing?

Don't blame the RSPCA for destroying the animals - it has been common practice for a very long time. Stray dogs handed it to the police were routinely put down after 7 days if not claimed. I don't know if that is still the case.
Blame the bad breeders who are just in it for the money; blame irresponsible dog owners who don't have their dogs neutured; blame the people who abandon their dogs; blame those that are cruel to their dogs or neglect them; blame those that decide to buy a puppy rather than rehome a dog from a shelter.

Many rescued dogs aren't able to be rehomed - they are illegal breeds; aggressive; trained for dog fighting, badger baiting, attack dogs which don't make good pets; untrainable.

It is a fact that there are far more dogs wanting homes than people willing to home them. The longer a dog is kept in kennels the less suitable they are for rehoming.

Those other charities that claim never to destroy a healthy dog are bending the truth somewhat. Many pass the difficult to home dogs to the RSPCA and other shelters that do destroy dogs.
the RSPCA are the biggest shower of sh1te in creation- they persecute smaller sanctuaries and rescues because they don't like the donation competition, couldn't give a toss about animal welfare and are generally unfit for purpose.
DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK IF YOU ARE OF A VERY SENSITIVE DISPOSITION AS IT SHOWS YOU AND WILL LEAD YOU OTHER LINKS SHOWING UNBELIEVABLE CRUELTY TOWARDS ANIMALS PERPETRATED BY THE RSPCA THEMSELVES.

the top bod gets a bit over £100,000, I think. That seems comparatively low for running such a big organisation. If they went without him for a couple of years they could maybe build another shelter (though they'd have to hire more people to staff it).

Meantime, what would you actually like the RSPCA to do with animals they have no room for?
Too many dogs, not enough homes and yet people go on breeding more and more! Where are they all to go?
hc thanks for putting the other side of the story. Agree with all you say. It is soul destroying, where are they all to go indeed. I notice my local small charity only takes the very re-homeable "pretty" ones whereas the RSPCA is full of Staffies and other hard to re-home dogs.
I'm shocked that people are shocked that so many are put to sleep. It has been well known for years. Too many dogs and not enough good homes and still more and more dogs are bred - now that is shocking.
It's the same with cats, too, ladybirder. Very sad. People are buying Maine Coon, Rag Doll, Bengal and other pedigrees instead of homing a young tabby.
BIG money to be made breeding pedigree cats and dogs. If there is a runt in the litter, it is destroyed.
I know hc, I know. So depressing.
ladybirder - did you not read my comment one above from yours - I said exactly the same thing as your last sentence ?

BUT will breeders ever stop - doubt it !!!
Licence all breeders.
Everybody selling pedigree kittens and puppies should be licensed, even if they claim to not be running a business.

Bring in compulsory neutering of dogs and cats that are not licensed for breeding. Hefty fines for those owners that don't comply, plus the neutering. I would happily donate to a charity that will do it for free or discounted for those that can't afford it.

Compulsory microchip dogs and cats.

Compulsory vet insurance for dogs and cats so there is no excuse for pets not being treated when necessary.

Compulsory 3rd party insurance for dogs so the owner can be sued for any damage or injury caused by the dog. It shouldn't be expensive - most dogs never cause damage or injury.

This is draconian and harsh, but keeping a pet is a huge responsibility and expensive.
Now you're talking sense hc, but who's listening? What can we do to make it happen?

Chaps I wouldn't dare not to read your comments on an animal thread:-)
Strange comment ladybirder .....

Thought you were up on animal welfare too !!!!
Did ladybirder mean Nox's link, Chaps?
Ignore me.
Strange comment ladybirder [i Chaps my 17.43 comment to you was meant as a joke, hence the smiley. Not very funny I admit. Sorry.

I don't understand why you say [i] Thought you were up on animal welfare too ] Whatever have I written on this thread that makes you think I'm not?
