Hi there I have a beautiful 7 month old kitten who soils occasionaly in exactly the same place. She is normally very good with her litter as she is an indoor kitten and is a lovely happy kitten who brings great joy. I went to a pet shop and was given a spray to spray on the place and this will smell horrible to her but not to me and discourage repeat soiling I dont know why she is doing this her litter tray is always clean and she seems perfectly happy before and after she has done it (but I'm not!!) Any ideas the reason why?

firstly is she spayed?

secondly clean the area with soap powder and hot hot water - do not use ammonia to clean the spot as that encourages her to keep doing it.

Have you moved the litter tray at all, what do you clean the tray with? Have you changed the litter - my kitty hated it when I changed her litter and did dirty protests to prove it.

If this continues take her to the vet it may be she has a water infection and that is her way of getting you to notice.

It is not urine she is soiling
She will still be able to smell herself in the area even after you've cleaned it with soap powder - even if you can't. Try sprinking the area with bicarbonate of soda after you've cleaned it all up. Leave it for a while and then hoover it up.

Should remove the smell, and hopefully she won't go back there.
OK something has upset her - as before what are you cleaning the spot with? what are you cleaning the tray with? have you changed the litter? have you tried ground pepper?
Whatever you do, don't clean the area with anything pine scented - it will only encourage her!
gordie, I have an elderly cat who occasionally does the same. Fortunately, when he does this it's always on the tiled floor close to the toilet (or next to the human litter tray, as OH likes to say). However, he only ever does this when something is wrong - either when he is unwell or else when something outside has scared him, usually the neightbour's cat giving him a thrashing.

So I would suggest that her 'dirty protest' (good phrase, FGT!) might be in response to some kind of upset. Have you had visitors in the house, such as a small child? Or any kind of disruption or change in routine? Or is there a noise that she doesn't like, such as a washing machine or tumble dryer?

I don't think she would be doing this without a reason, so maybe a bit of detective work is called for.
In addition to cleaning where she's pooed, take a little of the poo and bury it in her litter tray (I know it sounds disgusting, but it's not as bad as having piles of poo around the place).
