Fireworking Fireworks!

Fireworking FIREWORKS. I make no apologies for that, I have just been and retrieved the body of a beautiful two year old mastiff bitch from the central reservation of the A11. She was spooked last night and managed to escape from the garden where her owner was tending to his elderly mother. Driving home this morning I noticed what I thought was a dead deer but seeing on facebook this mastiff was missing near me I went back to check just in case, and sadly it was poor Lady. I played dodge the traffic and managed to get her into my van then the owner arrived and we took her home so he could bury her. What a waste of a young life.

Very sad but to me, it`s just one of those things. Same as a horse being spooked by low flying jets. You can`t ban the jets. It`s nobody`s fault.

it could just as easily been a sheep horse or cow that jumped a fence through fright, that would have caused more damage/injury to a car/driver.

What a sad thing to have happen, my sympathies to the owners, they must be deeply gutted!

It's a terrible shame that his dog had to die however perhaps it will teach him to act a bit more responsibly as a pet owner in future.

My dog was dying for a wee but daren't go out until 2 a.m. when I had o get up and let her out. My previous dog was so terrified of fireworks that it caused him to have a stroke and he died a short time after. I think they should definitely be banned in back yards or gardens so close to houses. I send my deepest sympathy to the dog's owners - they surely could not foresee that it could have got out in a closely fenced garden especially if it had never got out before.

Perhaps you should, being the resident dog expert. A bit more responsibility might have gone a long way in keeping his dog safe and ALIVE.

many years ago, when my sister and i had 2 ponies, we were struggling to find grazing for them as it was the hot summer of 1976. we found a field about 5 miles from our farm that we could rent. we checked it out and it was safe secure and more importantly well shaded sloping down to a stream and so the grazing was excellent. we both worked but still checked on jet and mandy twice a day, one sunday we arrived and the field was empty, we found where a gate in the far end had been left open, accidentally or on purpose and probably by kids, weanaged to track the two ponies along the stream edge and through other fields along the disused railway and as we came under the railway tunnel we saw them both in a farm field. the lady farmer had taken them in about 30 minutes earlier, we were so relieved. as we put their halters on and told her how grateful we were that they were safe, she said snidly, 'better keep a closer eye on them then, might not get them back next time' it was so cutting! I was very upset and so was my sister, we hadn't left the gate open and it had had a decent chain on it but someone had unwound the chain on purpose. I have never forgotten her tone and her mean words.

On a lighter note, we only realized our always grumpy and less than interested dogs had gone deaf when she'd suddenly "got over" her fear of fireworks one year!

oh there's a good solution then, we'll deafen all our pets temporarily during the firework season, new year, ramadan and the chinese new year and also the wedding season oh and anytime anyone 21 has a party using fireworks. good plan eh?

I don't recommend it actually! She's quite good at "sign-language" now though. It's only funny as she'd always been a grumpy dog who didn't like to "listen" as it were!

My sympathy to the dogs owner,and to you lankeela...such a pointless death.
I think too many on here are being overly judgemental of the owner without knowing the full circumstances. All we do know is that the dog was spooked and escaped what was most likely a secure garden while the owner may have been occupied with his mum . We don't know if the dog had a history of being scared of loud noises. Maybe it didn't and this was out of character.
So-I'd suggest withholding judgement until all the facts are known.
