Birds that build nests in trees hop,  they that build in banks,  gorseland etc  walk
I dasagree with bill107.  It is more to do with bird size and energy efficiency.  In general, small birds hop and large birds walk/waddle.  Some inbetween sized birds sometimes walk and sometimes waddle.  I think obstacle size in relation to bird size also has an effect since a goose can easily walk through a field of stubble to pick up spilled grain, but a sparrow would find this difficult if it didn't hop.
Edit to above . . The sentence in the middle should read:  Some inbetween sized birds sometimes walk and sometimes hop.
