A friend of mine has a cat that has started smelling musky, it is medium haired, and it has not rolled in anything as far as she could see, the smell has been lingering for about 2 weeks now and not getting better or worse, any ideas on what this could be???

Perhaps the cat has brushed against a plant that gives off a similar odour?  It may be that if it is a plant, then it's something in the cat's garden, which would explain the lingering smell.  Just an idea.

If the cat is an unneutered tom, then the smell is because he is male & the only way to get rid of it is to have him neutered. If it isn't a tom cat, a change in smell can be due to kidney problems...that leaves a strange distinct whiff, or what about anal gland problems...that's a weird old stink...kind of cross between rotten eggs & fish!

There are probably loads of other illnesses/conditions that can cause strange smells, so it needs a trip to the Vet for sure.
