Cream of mushroom/tomato soup

Why is it called cream 'of' tomato soup and cream 'of' mushroom soup? Neither of these foods contain cream the cream is added to the soup later.
Surely tomato/mushroom soup 'with' cream would be more logical?
Anyone shed any light?

it doesnt have to contain cream, its the cream of tomato or the cream of mushroom. When something is of creamy texture its not always cream.
i.e. anti wrinkle cream.
Just tradition I suspect. It sounded appetising. That's marketing hype for you.
Cream (v). (transitive): to combine two or more things to form a thick smooth mixture. (Macmillan Dictionary)
It's made with cream to give it that creamy texture but why it's called cream 'of' rather than 'creamy' or 'with cream' i have no idea.
