He has taken a wrong turn and become stranded in New Zealand.
First time in 44 Years that an Emperor Penguin has been seen in the Country.

I see that they are going to leave him and not rescue him.

I have no doubt that will cause a divide amongst animal lovers - and I can see the logic of both their arguments.

Probably got diverted by the volcanic ash cloud from Chile.

Research (NIWA) ship Tangaroa will set sail from Wellington on August 29 with the penguin aboard.
The ship, which will carry out research into Southern Ocean fisheries, will release the bird four days into the voyage near Campbell Island, which is within the normal feeding range of Emperor penguins.

And he lived happily ever after...
