I do them for £12. My local vet has an offer at present for £10 and Dogs Trust usually do them cheaper, also my local pet superstore often has a 'micochipping' day. £25 is very expensive. Where abouts are you, I can ask on my dog groups for someone local to you.

Our vets some times have special offers for a set period for microchipping.

as pinkilady say £25 is the amount that I paid for each of my cats.
if you were anywhere near here, trt itd cost you about a quid lol

My rescue cat Trisha was chipped at the vets where the rescue woman worked as a vet nurse and she said she gets it done for £8.

Pinkie, I don't think I'm that old yet to get lost or stolen :-).
Thanks for you answers everybody.
I was microchipping at a game fair a few years ago and a crowd of lads were offering me obscene amounts of money to 'chip' one of their mates! (I refused I hasten to add)
Our vets have a special offer at the moment, if you bring a pup or kitten for vaccine, they will microchip for £9.
Nine years ago when I took Max for his puppy jabs the vets I use chipped him for free. I noticed last time I was in they were doing it for £20 but they often have offers on.
June is National Microchipping Month where they promote it and have lots of offers at vets etc, but I would be happier getting the pup done sooner, just in case.
Are these prices just for the chip or for the chip and registration? when we got ours done 2 and a half years ago the cost was 20ish quid but that covered the lifetime registration as well. The vets do all the paperwork and you get the registration back by post.

I've often wondered if the cat/dog is already chipped with its owners info what happens to that chip if the animal goes to a new owner/home later in its life.

jem
its like a car logbook, you get paperwork to send to the registry to change owners. If the pet is picked up as a stray and scanned then the rescue or dog pound contact the registry who contact the registered owner. If the owner doesn't reply within (IIRC) 30 days then the animal is registered to the rescue who can transfer the registration to a new owner.
When I charge £12 that includes registration with Petlog. The owner gets sent a form and if they pass the animal on they can transfer it.
there is an amazing difference in vets charges - around here (Truro) a bog standard vets visit charge = £45. Recently, I went with a friend of mine to a vet in Cobham, Surrey, base charge £27....... are we in the SW being ripped off, a bit like water charges, as we have, apparently, the highest in the UK for that?
£14.99 here in North Devon for chipping.
