My dog is really not very well and I am really worried about her. She is 11 now and last week she started to go off her food, not too unusual as she is a fussy eater. But on monday she just layed around all day.wouldnt even look up at you. And not eaten anything. Took her to the vet who said she did have a slight temp. and her back end was sore to touch. so took blood tests. gave her two injection in one antibiotics. The test showed raised white blood cells and antibodies, which showed an infection of some sort.Since then she hasnt eaten, not even fish or fresh chicken. not really drinking much when she does have a drink she drinks a lot.Have given her antibiotics twice a day.but still no better.very lathargic and was sick today but didnt even get up.We have another appointment tomorrow night with the vet.Has anyone else had these symptoms with there bitch.?

Glad to hear she has come through the op ok. A good job you took her to the vet when you did, pyometra can be fatal if left untreated. I am sure she will be fine now, give her a gentle hug from me.
Just seen this post lilacben. Like many others on here I know what it is like to have a poorly pet and I do hope that your girl is back to normal soon

Oh you are all so kind. Your words have made me feel so much better to think people care so much. I had a latest update at 7.00 the vet phoned and said she isnt as lively as he had hoped by then but by tomorrow morning he really is hopeing she will be a lot more alert, with the drips all night it really should make a difference. The nurse who is on duty tonight it going to phone me at 11.00 when she makes her last check to let me know what she is like then.So lets hope she will be well enough to come home tomorrow. My other dog,Ben (also rough collie) keeps looking for her, they have never been apart in 8 years.
I had a bitch spayed because of a pyo. she was 8 when she had the op. and she was pretty groggy for a couple of days.

At 11 years old it is a very big op. so your vet is probably airing on the side of caution.

Sounds like they are taking really good care of her - my vet doesn't have anyone on at nights and the animals only get seen if the emergency vet goes into the surgery for something.

You are very lucky to have such good vets (and nurses of course!).

She will probably come on in leaps and bounds when you get her home. When my girl had her spleen removed she was in the vets for 2 nights, they could not get her to eat so sent her home on the third evening. Once she got back with my other 2 dogs she started to eat immediately and really recovered well.

Keep us updated!

Hi everyone, well Amber has now been let home. First thing this morning the vet said she had to stay in because she still will not eat anything. But we went to see her at lunchtime and they decided she may be better at home and prehaps "her mum" could get her to eat something. So I have put some nice white fish on to cook to see if she will eat that. If not will cook some chicken, just anything so that she eats something. Poor little thing is so sad and quite, although I suppose she is on strong painkillers.Ben was pleased to see her but I am having to make him backoff otherwise he was nearly laying on her.
So glad to hear she is home!

The first thing one of my dogs ate (after three days off his food) was a slice of 'teddy bear' turkey ham that you put in kids sandwiches, that started him off eating again and he progressed to more 'normal' food like chicken etc. - I would happily have bought 100 packets of it!!!

She is bound to be a bit sore - after all it is like a 77 year old woman having a hysterectamy (sorry about spelling).

When my girl got home after her op. she slept for the first couple of days, probably from all the stress of being in the vets as well as the op.

At least she is home and in very familiar /secure surroundings now, that alone will make her feel much better.

Thanks for the update - I have been checking on here all day!!!

Sending lots of healing prayers.

glad to hear ambers home, being in her home with the faces and smells shes used to will help. give her time to rest up and keep giving her loads of tlc.xxxxxx
SO glad you have Amber home - the best place for her. She will no doubt be feeling low at the moment but I am sure with your love she has the best possble chance of getting back to normal.

Me & Pickles (asleep on my feet) send love and get well wishes xx

Have tried her with the fish, no luck, wouldnt even look at it. So cooking chicken later. Thankyou for your food ideas. If there is anything else anyone has tried to get there dogs to eat I would be grateful.
kita1 turkey ham ah! I didnt know dogs could eat that. I was told years ago they shouldnt have pork or ham. Dont tell me all these years I have been mislead.! ha ha
Its lovely having her home with us, you just feel so helpless for them don't you.? Would rather it was me I think.thankyou all. xxx
Oh lilacben, lots of love and cuddles for your girl-Ben must be thrilled she's home, even if all she is doing is sleeping and moping! They sound a really cute pair.
I am so glad she is home; that in itself must be a relief for her, even if she is still a bit groggy.

I know it's a little bit naughty, but have you tried her on mashed potato? It is one of Jack's favourites ;) You could chop some chicken up in it too, in tiny bits, and/or veg. Jack also likes tuna. As Jack (Border Collie) is gluten intolerant, we don't give him a lot of treats, and admittedly they are sometimes portions of 'human food'! I know how you feel, and I bet you would buy a whole cow if it made Amber eat!

Take it easy, both of you x x
Just a thought,I was looking after a dog who's owners were on holiday, she wasn't well and wouldn't eat anything ( she had kidney failure ) I took her to the vets 3 times while I was there and the last time I saw a different vet who said to try her on something that wasn't so bland ie chicken or fish. he suggested pilchards so I went out and got her some with tomato sauce and without, she loved them and it got her appetite going again, I'm not saying it will help your little one but it might be worth a try. Don't buy too many tins though in case she doesn't like them!
When my oldest dog had to have an op recently I gave him scrambled egg with a tiny bit of cheese in it and he thought that was yummy - mind you, he is a labrador and very easy to feed but I wondered if that might tempt your girl? It's good that she is home now and i hope that she feels better very soon.

Hi again, thankyou for food ideas but I am afraid Amber just doesnt want to know. Even tried oxo cube in water and tried to syringe feed her but she shook her head and spat it out, She has had a drink of water. Her ears go up today when you speak to her so that is an improvement. It was nice to hear her breathing by my bed last night and that she was home.
I think all you can do is to keep offering anything and everything.

When my boy was refusing to eat he was offerred everything Morrissons had on their shelves. Fried Liver, sliced ham, sliced chicken breast, fish (all types), cheese, buttered bread/toast, cake (sponge cake is good), cat food (smells good, cats are picky) and anything we were eating.

At least if she has had a drink that is something. You could try a bit of honey in the water (or glucose powder, you can get it in most chemists and supermarkets).

It is so difficult when they just turn their head away, my boy did not eat or drink for three days (or go outside for a wee). I really thought I was loosing him, then on the third night about 10 oclock he had a piece of ham! I was over the moon!

All you can do is keep trying, if she really will not eat you cannot force her.

Are you managing to get any tablets (from the vet) down her?

Hi kita1, Tried the pilchards still no joy. I am going to start trying the other things again this evening. Did you say ham is ok for dogs to eat.? As far as the tablets go I have to open her mouth and drop the tablet in then keep her mouth shut and tickling her throat until she swallows it. Boy do I hate doing it to her. My husband wouldn't do it he says I am better at it.! what a load of rubbish he just doesnt like doing it to her, as if I do.! It is a week today since she last ate something. Managed to get her to have a drink of water this morning but no more since. Thankyou for keeping in touch it helps me to have someone to share it with, you know what men are like.!!!!! xx
Yes, I have always given my dogs ham/pork etc. My present dog enjoys a couple of strips of pork belly (complete with crackling) as part of his daily meal.

When he was not eating I took the view that anything (providing it was not deadly poisonous) he ate could only do him good.

Honey is very good and often they will lick it off your hand.

Yes, I know what men are like!!!! I do everything for my animals, my other half uses that excuse (that I am better at it).

I am sure lots of others will be on later too - the only reason I am not out and about is that I choose to spend the day with my old boy too (the dog that is not my OH!), he is a bit past long walks and days out now.

I know how frustrating it is - but I am sure Amber is happier to be home with you and you are doing everything you can for her. Stick with it.
Hi sorry to hear she is still feeling poorly but she is an older girl so it will take her longer to pick up i agree anything as long as its not poison once she starts hopefully she will carry on,. will she drink milk ,soup chicken or oxtail.runny porridge will she eat corn beef ,sausages, cheese mashed with a little potatoe ,cat food ,cat treats ,yogurt, bacon, sweet biscuits, will keep thinking for you as i know what its like your heads not on straight at the moment you are to worried to think straight
