Dogs and foxes

My 2 Jack russels killed a fox in the garden yesterday. I got rid of the fox and de-fleaed the dogs. Was wondering if i should take the dogs to the vet ? Incase they have caught something... Also does this mean that my usually friendly dogs are now going to be hard to control..

people have different opinions and are allowed to have free speech as for the dogs....yes get them flead and vaccinated asap

I have to say that I was mauled in the face by a Jack Russell when I was about 4 years old...just bent down to stroke the thing and it clamped onto my head. Was also sunny weather and i was camping with my parents. The owners were adamant that i was at fault and must have done something to the dog in order to agitate it - what b0ll0cks! All dogs are potentially dangerous (regardless of size or breed), particulalry when around unfamiliar people and should never be left unsupervised with children, regardless of how cute, fwuffy or 'obedient' they are. This risk is heightened by poor owners as well and my experiences have left me with a deep seated mistrust of all dogs and only reinforced by those dog owners i meet who can't (or fail to) control their animals properly. I also have to say that once these dogs have killed another creature, they are more likely to do it again (to some poor unsuspecting cat or similar) and you should take steps to avoid this (i.e. not leaving yours dogs unsupervised or training)

This is getting silly now as i posted a genuine question... my dogs are contained in my garden and when in public they are on leads. Of course no dog should be left on its own with a child but then again i would not leave a fox with a child.... and all of you that have a story about being attacked by a jack russel all i can say is that there will be the same amount of people with the same story but a different dog.. think yourself lucky it was'nt a doberman...

As regards the dogs health I would worm them as well as de fleaing them.

I would also be careful if any of your neighbours have cats that travel through your garden. If they kill a neighbours cat you could end up seriously falling out with the neighbour. Most cats will probably avoid the dogs, but if you get a slow/old one in your garden just as you let the dogs out it could end up getting caught.

Jack Russells will kill cats and most other small furry creatures - it is what they were bred to do and it gives them the 'character/spirit' that people love about them.

Can't say that i have seen many cats pass through my garden and i know my neighbour does not own one but will will bare your comment on slow/old cats in mind when i let the dogs out.

My dogs were brought up with cats, but doG help a strange one that tries to cut through my garden.

And as for getting the dogs vaccinated, other than rabies there is nothing that a dog can catch from a fox that they are vaccinated against.

Parents should know better than to let a four year old bend down to stroke a strange dog.

I have a Jack Russell, and yes he is a grumpy little S**t at times, and he can be quite nasty but its nothing to do with how the owners have brought them up, both my dogs have been spoilt, my staffie is a mardy dog and wouldnt leave your side, whereas my Jack Russell would love nothing more than to run off and keep running, the trouble with JR (Well mine anyway lol) is they are not afraid of many things and has it has been said, this is what the dog was originally bred for, at the end of the day they are terriers, any pet you have no matter what breed or kind can be nasty.Not a good thing to happen to the fox I know, but if you were approached by a bigger person than you and you felt intimidated, you would do no more than stick up for yourself. I suppose its the same for the Jack Russell and the fox really.

I've just come in from a walk around the fields, my youngest German Shepherd spotted some movement in the grass, it turned out to be a Sparrow hawk with a pigeon, Hawk flew off as madam ran up to it, pigeon was about to fly off but unfortunately dog got there first, I have to say I did feel quite bad about it as the poor thing got away from one predator but went straight into the jaws of another, it's a dogs instinct to chase and ultimately to kill, this particular dog has killed so many rabbits I have lost count, it doesn't make her nasty though, she acts on instinct, my old GSD now 13 has killed 2 foxes in his lifetime again acting on instinct, I don't have cats now but when I did all the dogs and cats used to sleep cuddled up to each other, just because a dog kills a fox/rabbit doesn't mean it will kill all things.

be thankful it wasn't a dobermann??? yeah - the really big scar down my face makes me feel so happy where the dog bit me...you posted on this site asking for advice and i gave it. just because you don't like what i said doesn't mean you can insult people - i was merely pointing out the facts, like once dogs have killed they are more likely to do it again and that seeing as last time your dogs ripped something to shreds they were in your back garden - so maybe if you don't want them doing it again you'll have to watch them a bit better too. dogs are dangerous animals, and your mentality also does nothing to disprove my theory that most people haven't got a clue how to be responsible with them and/or either just don't care when dog haters point it out - because of their experiences

Grow-up you fool.... 4 yr old kids should not be bending down to stroke a strange dog, your parents or the dog owner should of stopped you... fortunately i don't have stray 4 yr olds passing though my garden...or any other tresspassers... i was merely pointing out that all dogs regardless of breed are capable of going on the turn and that if it was a bigger dog it would of done a lot more damage...
