I was told they chase their tails when they are bored.

If Pickles does this I just get her some toys, get on the floor and play a game with her!
It can be a symptom of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Distraction is the best way to stop it.
My dog only does it when we have visitors, and also he can't reach his tail as it was docked when he was a puppy so he just spins around in circles instead. "Crazy Mutt"
My pup does it too, he's just playful. its so funny, he gets dizzy and falls down or can't walk straight!
