Perhaps the litter tray isn't in a suitable place. The poor critter likes some privacy to do his business.

Have you tried picking him up when he disappears behind the chair and putting him in the litter box?

Have you tried putting a second litter box behind the chair (for a week or so) in case he doesn't quite understand what the litter box is for?

With a little bit of patience he should be litter trained in a couple of days.
Try putting the dirt tray there for a few days. Then move it to where you want to bit by bit. It can take time sometimes. It should pay off in the end.
The previous advice is good - I had the same problem with one of my cats (she's now 10yrs old & perfectly litter-trained!) You just have to persevere - they'll soon learn (but I know it's not very pleasant while you're teaching them!! Bless....) K xx
He might not like the type of litter you're using. They tend to prefer the finer-grained types as they are softer on their paws.

What type are you currently using?
