I am sure everyone has their own preferences.............I love my roughs who are also loyal, intelligent, obedient and loving, they are also very beautiful on the eye.
Labradors, hands down for me. We have had 8 over the years.
I don't think there is such a thing as best breed, they all have their different characteristics and traits, it just depends on what you like or are looking for.
Boxers for me but it's very much personal preference. For example I had a Dobermann and she was the most wilfully disobedient and stupid dog I've ever known (and yes she was trained).

Mongrels for me, every time.
I love Belgian Shepherds, but would agree that they are probably not everyone's cup of tea, so I would put labradors at the top of the list - my family and I have had six labradors over the years (not all at once!) and they have all been lovely, loving dogs and very easy to deal with.
Japanese Akitas for me, except their fluff, it drives me mad.
Prudie, my brothers dobbie is exactly like that and our old family one was a complete nutcase. Still loved him though.
I think frank is exactly right. There is so much variation in breeds (i think dogs officially have the most variation in one species). It depends entirely on what suits you. We've had German shepherds, golden retrievers, standard poodle, mongrels, springers, cavaliers, spaniel crosses (all rescued). And each and every one of them were lovely in their own way. We have cavaliers now, as great temperaments with children and relaxed. Will walk as far as you want, but also happy with just company. Fussy with food and not the brightest, though!
Springer spaniels if you are very very strict with them....
Frank has it. It's horses, or, rather, dogs for courses. I would never have a Dobermann or any guard, protection or fighting breed in a home with very small children. But a lab or golden retriever would be fine. If you like a breed that's very active and more intelligent than you are, pick a Border collie! There are at least 170 breeds on the Kennel Club list and every one of them has been originally bred for a purpose, from retrieving game to being a dog for temples, from living on barges to guarding taxmen, the vestiges of which remain in its behaviour and character. There will be one that's essentially right for you. Me, I like Irish Wolfhounds; big, affectionate, not very bright; Dandie Dinmonts; small, not cuddly and typical terriers; and Hungarian Pulis; stubborn, crafty, and aggressive enough to require experienced owners; but all to their own
Terriers. And of them the Cairn Terrier rates highly in my view.
We've had two Curly coat Retrievers and they are just gorgeous, one of my Westies is a darling and the other one ...well least said soonest mended
I love bulldogs, but they've been over-bred so much that they're now (in my opinion) ruined, as they have so many health problems.

I do like mongrels, but you just can't seem to find them for sale these days??? :-/
I dare not say, you will snigger at me.
I too like most breeds of dog but you only have to look at my avatar to know what my favourite breed is.
My first dog was a Bull Mastiff crossed with a GSD and the next was a Labrador crossed with a GSD. Both great dogs. First one I got as a puppy from a friend but the second one was a rescue dog.

I would never get a devil dog like a Jack Russell or something small and yappy but would consider most other breeds or a mutt.

I may get another if my health improves - meantime I am a cat slave.
Border Collie. Not a dog for the elderly tho.
