Our big old boy, 15yrs, not been well for some time. Swollen face tonight so we took him to the vet. Mouth ulcerated and now weighs 2.5kg (was 6.2). 'Easy' decision - but he was such a lovely boy.
Went so peacefully in my arms, so why can't I stop crying.

As you can see jakep, the AB is chock full of pet lovers who understand and send out their love and sympathy. Whenever you start to love someone, or something, there is pain at the end of it. Sincere thanks everyone. Hope his 'sister' was at Rainbow Bridge for him
So sad for you. You were lucky to enjoy his devotion and trust in you. Remember the good times.
Very sorry to hear that. BUt when a beloved pet becomes ill letting it go is the last kindness you can show it.

wolf, absolutely no need for apology, sorry I did not make myself clear. At Battersea he was called Skippy! 6.2kg of male cat! He was our Ferdie. Oops crying again now
So sorry to hear you sad news jakep. I am sure that you have many happy memories which will help you through this sad time.
Jake sorry to hear of your little animal - I too think that is ahead of me too re my wee dog. However, so far so good - the lump is still there though.

Didn't get out today as it has been torrential rain most of the day.
Wow, he was one big puss. So lucky to have found you.
I feel for you Jakep. Been there lots of times. I can no longer have a cat because of the heartbreak when they die. I still love them to bits though.
6.2kg - he was a cuddly chap - my Frankie weighs in at 5kg. We tried weighing his sister but she went berserk and tried to bit the nice vet lady.

My first love and my first dog died in 1988 - I still miss him. I was talking to my pal about him yesterday.

The raw pain that you feel now will decrease in intensity - but there will always be a corner or your heart where you store the memories that you have of your time together.

I hope that his sister is waiting for him (its a nice thought), if my Frankie bumped into Princess Merlin at Rainbow Bridge she would probably beat the cr*p out of him like she does whilst on planet Earth.
jakep, I am so sorry to read about your loss , it is so very painful when our furry families pass on. I think it is the utter unconditional love they give, the trust and dependency all contribute to their lives. Don't try to stop your tears, they will turn to a smile when you are ready. Hugs xx

Oh dear, I am so sad.
This AB place is truly a friend in need, isn't it x
Doesn't get any easier no matter how many times you have to do it. Console yourself that you did what was right - and better a day too soon than a moment too late. Cherish the memories, they will be with you forever.
I know exactly what you are feeling, I've been there a couple of times myself.

I think of the lines to the song:

"It's better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all"

I know it wasn't written with this in mind, but it seems to fit perfectly.

So sorry. Even tho it is the right decision it's hard to lose our faithful friends.
So sorry..but you did the right thing xx
So sorry for you. It's so hard to let them go when their time has come. Hold on to the memories.

Once again, thank you all for your kind thoughts.
so sorry for your loss, its made me cry. We had to let our 14yr old shar pei go over the rainbow bridge, he could not walk in the end, hubby was devastated we had Taz from 12 weeks old, in fact he never got over it and died himself 3 weeks later and his last words were about his dog.
As you can see jakep, the AB is chock full of pet lovers who understand and send out their love and sympathy.

Whenever you start to love someone, or something, there is pain at the end of it.

That is what you accept when you begin a relationship with a pet, but it doesn't make the parting one tiny bit easier.

Loving your pet properly is about knowing when it is time to let them go, when every inch of you aches to keep them with you for a little bit longer to postpone that agony that you know is coming.

But loving is about doing what is right for him, and that is what you did. So when you cry, remember he doesn't, and when you hurt, remember he doesn't and when you smile, remember that somewhere, he does, and that you loved him as much as he loved you, and he thanks you for ending his suffering.

Time does heal - no-one knows how much though, but living without him becomes bearable eventually, and you can remember him with fondness, not so much pain.

That day will come, and until then the AB'ers are here to support you any time.
Andy, that was lovely. Had me in tears
