i am always amazes that they have stopped a widespread past practice of interviewing wives when the husband is applying for a prestigious post.
To me, the wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons, plays a very important role both supportive and representative.

It was always the rule in the 50's and 60's and perhaps a little later to have luncheon drinks with the short listed candidates and their wives before presenting themselves for interview for a Consultant post in the NHS at the palatial buildings of the Regional Board. You could chat to the wives, assess their mode of presentation and judge if they would be a "suitable Consultant's wife"

Tis a pity that this method seem to have fallen into disrepute and saved us the unsavory antics of the wife of "our Speaker."

With the widespread use of the internet, social network sites and tweeting etc. it is nowadays easier to 'interview' a candidate's wife (or husband) discreetly', in fact without their knowledge; it certainly should have been in the case of Mrs. Bercow.

My sister had to be interviewed by someone from the police force before she was 'allowed' to marry a policeman, this was in 1967.
Let's take the vote off em while were at it. Jeez.
'' a suitable consultants wife'' in the 50's 60's,,,,,,,,,,, breed.cook.and tollerate their husbands tantrums .
I'm not sure if this taking the family into consideration is such a good thing. Imagine John Major being interviewed by the selection committee when he was looking his first parliamentary seat.
"Tell us a little about you family, John. What does your father do?"
"Well, before he retired he was a tightrope walker and strongman in a circus..."
Is the lack of a punchline the reason for this not being posted in Jokes?
I am no supporter of Sally Bercow - Self-serving attention- seeking wannabe celebrity, and some of her recent antics - the "tastefully draped" semi nude photo shoot, her refusal to withdraw her tweets about Lord McAlpine etc have certainly tarnished the reputation of the position by association.

Still, many tories would claim that John Bercow has been a bigger discgrace to the role in his own right :)

And on the specific issue of attendance at Thatchers funeral - we often complain about the lack of conviction politicians nowadays - And if one politicians conviction or conscience dictates that they should not attend, then we should respect that decision, hard as it may be to respect anything that Sally Bercow might do :)
What's it like back there in the 50s Sqad?

no trigger. the mistresses were often working in the same hospital.
Sqad, what rules out a man for being a consultant because he has a wife that doesn't appeal to the interviewers? What does she have to be or do to make him unsuitable? Ruddy good job that advancement at the Bar wasn't based on such considerations ! My experience was that, at best, High Court and Appeal Court judges had wives who were either borderline mad or utterly terrifying, while they, themselves, were modest, normal, but exceptional barristers and judges.

Who should care what the wife is like? We've moved on from the idealism in "Caesar's wife should be above suspicion" to "Oh, that's just the way she is", haven't we ?

Fred........just a thought from the past Fred.......just a moment of thought and pondering.....just a little smile came to my aged face as I compared our Speaker's wife to my idea of such a woman.

Khandro....congratulations....the first poster to see the point of my post.
i agree wiith khandro. it IS done, just more discreetly
Mrs Bercow is merely showing herself for what she is. She despises the conservative party and anything that smacks of privilege yet is content to enjoy the perks associated with her husband's role and live in the luxurious home provided for the Speaker.
