Contact calls maybe constantly checking you are still near,,, domestic cats keep a lot of kitten behaviour the separation will have unsettled her
Maybe she managed to get shut in some body's shed or garage, probably went in nosing around and someone shut the door without realising there was a cat inside.
Maybe she was as worried as you were about her absence and is a bit scared, a lot of TLC called for.
When we moved into a new house, our cat went missing for a few days, but we could hear him occasionally which we put down to imagination. Having thought through all our actions since moving in we remembered that we had looked at the foundations through a floor hatch as the house was on a steep hillside. Sure enough, out he popped, thinner but OK, there'd been water down there.

Hope your cat recovers soon from her experience.
Oh dear, glad she's back. I would make a lot of fuss of her to reassure her and just watch her closely over the next few days. You could have a chat to your vet and see what advice you get from there.
I don't want to worry you but we had a cat that went missing, she returned apparently uninjured after a few days but kept crying. She was examined by a vet and had a small injury on her paw dressed and was sent home. She died a couple of days later from probable internal injuries caused by a vehicle hitting her.
Take her to the vet if you're worried, Mikesnook. But she's probably had a very unpleasant four days as Tonyav suggests. They're pretty resilient on the whole. Hope she turns out fine.
This is quite common behaviour for a cat when its routine is disrupted (e.g. after being put in a cattery or having to stay at the vets). She will have been upset by her adventure and is just settling back in.
has she been spayed? mine went missing for six weeks thought had lost her forever the dirty little minx came back pregnant!!! she maybe crying as hungry tired and dehydrated get her checked out at vet if concerned. At least she is back home give her lots tlc x
Oh please tell me she had been spayed, If not she has been the target for every Tom cat for miles around. No wonder she's crying if that's the case. Please let us know miles.

thanks everybody, thankfully she has been spayed as she was a rescue cat as was her sister, your comments have been taken onboard, her crying has calmed down, but if she is crying tomorrow a trip to the vets is on the cards, thanks again and bless you all.

So relieve she's been spayed mike. Hope she's OK tomorrow.
When I take Frankie to the vet for his regular steroid jag he wanders around the house screaming for hours after we get home. I thought that it was the jag and the medication but the vet said that they are creatures of routine and it was 'normal' behaviour. I didn't think that anything feline was 'normal'.

I found a solution - I go out and leave him to scream. Tough love !!
It does sound like she is reassuring herself that her family is still around, so as advised, plenty of affection and talking to her will help. Try and leave as many internal doors open as is practical, so she can roam at will, but still get to you when she wants to 'check' on you.
mikesnook1, glad you have been reunited with your cat. We got our tom cat
from the cats protection league and he went missing only 3 days after we got
him when next door's dog barked and made him jump and he shot off like a
bat out of hell. I sat by the back door for the next four nights [thinking the
worst, that I was never going to see him again, because he hadn't had time to get used to his new surroundings] but on the fourth night he wandered back in like he'd never been away. Perhaps he never went far [I will never know] but I'm just glad he came back. He is 11 now and can still be quite kittenish!
one of my cats a few years ago went missing for a week, I went out calling
her name in the evening, probably asleep somewhere during the day.
Went around neighbours gardens calling, all to no avail.
Then on the Friday morning, she came sauntering down the back path as if
I'd let her out that morning, walked in, just her usual miaows...no
idea to this day where she went to.
Luckily she was spayed and had collar on, so no idea.!
Next door has a cat that goes missing for weeks or months on end!
It's the cat way isn't it?

As someone once said about the difference between cats and dogs -

a dog will give you instant and undying affection, a cat will take a message and get back to you!
