My 10 year old son has been in a cabin bed since earlier this year, its one of the metal framed ones from Argos with the play tent thing underneath. He has had no problems with it until last week when he fell down the ladder and banged his eye on a cupboard. He has been sporting a lovely shiner for a week.
My daughter is about to go into one of the lower ones, the mattress is probably about 4 foot off the ground. She is 6 yrs old. I think most have an age of 6 or 7 years upwards.
Ouch daffy, hope your sons shiner gets better soon!
My sons both went into Cabin Beds at about 2 and a half or 3. They were the mid sleeper type and they had a barrier all the way around. i figured that there was less chnace of them falling out of one of these than a normal single bed. I never had any problem with them, but I did make sure that they had the steps that are flat to put your foot on rather than the poles or wooden pieces where you have to climb up on the narrow edge of the wood. As they now like to share a room, they have graduated to full size bunks - now age 7 and 6.
