Pictures on e:mails not appearing when received

When I forward picture e:mails to my friends for some reason they are not receiving the pictures. Where the picture should be is a blank square with a little box at the top right hand side with a red cross in it. There is no option to click to open pictures. This sometimes happens when I receive e:mails too. Does anyone have any idea what causes this problem and what I might be able to do to solve it? Thanks
