Phil Lynott's battle with drugs and drink is well known. Having taken heroin, he collapsed on Christmas Day 1985. Ten days later, on 4 Jan 1986, Phil succumbed to 'pneumonia and heart failure due to scepticaemia.' He was just 36 years old.
Throughout the day, i will be playing some Thin Lizzy songs in his memory. While it won't be as involved as my recent tribute to Freddie Mercury, it will be just as heartfelt.
Like many, i had never heard of the band until they (reluctantly) released Whiskey In The Jar in 1973. However, the band had been formed 4 years prior, and this track is off their self titled debt album;

Lizzy's 2nd album, Shades of a Blue Orphanage, was released in 1972, the name being the combination of the member's former bands, Shades Of Blue and Orphanage. I've chosen this track as it was written for Phil's grandmother, Sarah, who was instrumental in rearing him. He would later have a daughter who he would name Sarah and who he would also write a song about.

I gather from a friend (who worked in a pub near bath that Mr Crowther used to frequent) that Leslie Crowther was none too pleased with his daughter's choice of spouse - Phil Lynott ticked two of his prejudice boxes.......
36 years ago! How time does zoom past, a very talented and complicated chap.
it's sad that so often these rock star types end up killing themselves with drugs. Have some Whiskey in the jar ken!
sorry forgot the link:

Hi Ken, not quite what you're asking for, but great song, great solo, bad video lol. RiP Phil.

Yes, M, 36 not 35 as i said in my OP.

Mushroom, i've never read anything saying Crowther wasn't pleased with his daughter's choice of husband. Baby Sarah had already been born when Phil asked his father in law for his daughter's hand. Crowther is reported to have joked, "Well, you've had everything else."

That was to be my next choice, TTT. You've saved me the bother :-)))

This 3rd album, Vagabonds Of The Western World, was guitarist Eric Bell's finale as a member of Thin Lizzy, and the first to feature the excellent artwork of Jim Fitzpatrick on the sleeve.

Thanks Ken:-) love the song though.
here's a nice tribute with Eric Bell in it.

TTT, that whole One Night In Dublin concert is brilliant and a quite fitting tribute to Phil Lynott, Gary Moore being not only Phil's friend, but also one of the best guitarists ever. I watch it on quite a regular basis.
Thanks Ken x yes, looking forward to your Gary Moore tribute...
I have seen lots and lots of live bands, throughout the 70s. 80s+90s. But i can say unequivocally that Lizzy were the best band ive seen live. I only saw them once, in ´78 . I was mezmerrized all throughout the concert.
