I live in a very hard water area and can't keep on top of the limescale that kills my electric kettles. I'm thinking of buying a stove top, would that suffer the same fate?

Yes, the same water and the same temperature.

Back to the drawing board. I've resorted to buying very cheap kettles as they are lasting as long as the mega expensive ones
Our kettle used to be like yours with limescale but since we started putting in water from the water filter instead of straight from the tap it is no longer a problem.

I tried the water filter some years ago when I bought (another) new kettle. It didn't seem to make much difference or perhaps the kids were filling the kettle straight from the tap.
When our children, now adults came around they used to do that until we told them and now they always use it from the filter we no longer get it and kettles last a lot longer too.

Do you use a jug filter or do you have a filter tap?
Jug filter Britta thing.
Have you tried a hard water kettle? Interested myself as I'm also in a hard water area.
I can tell you that brita filters do work to reduce the kettle furring up. Both the jugs and the tap filters have the same stuff in but you must be rigorous about using them and replacing the filters. I live in a very very hard water area and always used a jug filter till we got a filter tap.

What's a hard water kettle, Chelle? I've never heard of them
Apparently they filter the water on the way in, don;t know anyone who has tried one though!

The only thing I would say about that is that you can't then use filtered water for any other function unless you put it through the kettle. If filtering is going to work then why not get a jug or a tap and any kettle you like?

I have used gallons of Viakal over the years. I have to use it regularly on all the taps and showerheads. I think I may move to a soft water area :D
A water softener is the real answer. Not cheap but no more messing about getting the limescale off taps etc. Kettles, washing machines etc last for many years.
A combination of water filter and an occasional boil full of white vinegar keeps our kettle sparkly clean
I think you aren't supposed to drink salt softened water. You can get a reverse osmosis softener system where you can drink the water.
woofy - one of those scare stories. The amount of salt in softened water is absolutely minimal. I'm 74, have been drinking softened water for around 50 years and have only recently been put on tablets for high blood pressure.
We used a water filter jug for a while but I went back to buying cheap kettles again when I weighed up the cost of the filter inserts. A box of 6 was more than a new supermarket kettle. Not very environmentally friendly but a lot less fuss.
