Why should Moderators who are debating in opposition, be allowed the power to remove posts, surely they should be seen to be either impartial or not given the power to remove?

Can the forum software not be tweaked such that no account is able to delete its own posts?

Andy has just offered us his word that other Mods are sorting things out on his behalf but a software tweak would ensure that this will always be so and might assuage AOG's complaint.

It's a shame to put all your mods in a boat with "not entirely trusted" on the side but, if it makes users happier, why not give it a try?

Hyognosis - //Andy has just offered us his word that other Mods are sorting things out on his behalf but a software tweak would ensure that this will always be so and might assuage AOG's complaint. //

This has been discussed and explained times without number - and people who have asked have been advised, more than once, that the Editorial team oversee deletions, and if they judge them to be inappropriate, they can, and do, reinstate the post or thread involved.

I think all posters should be adult enough to accept that Moderators do the job as well as they are able, and assist in the smooth running of the site for everyone - and maybe be a little less keen to heap suspicion and criticism on them for doing a simple task well without reward, or it seems, very much appreciation.
Hypognosis - I don't think the complaint is about mods removing their own posts?
AOG has to remember that only a few of the moderators have let it be known.
ummmm - //AOG has to remember that only a few of the moderators have let it be known. //

And on the basis of the regular and tedious suspicion, veiled insults, and general hostility they receive, especially the known ones, they are probably regretting ever being identified, and possibly considering their position.
Must admit that Ed is on the ball this morning. 2 questions zapped good style. The first a new poster offering a link to a dubious search engine site and the second that included rather unflattering urban slang. Also on Saturday evening I applaud the mod who removed the new poster( who even managed to get a ba in an afternoon thread) and was obviously an old 'friend'. I will resist speculating on the id of the mod concerned but I think I know. Well done.
The thread was prompted by the removal of two threads, one of them AOGs.
The AOG thread was rather pointless and was no loss when it was removed. It was a continuation of an argument on another thread, but he was using the rape of children to point score and was rather unsavoury.

On the other thread, an AB member threatened another member.

I did not remove either thread, but deletion was the correct decision by the moderator or Ed who did so.

The moderating process works extremely well on this site, which is why it has never been changed. If some contributors feel disadvantaged by debating with a moderator, then don't.
Sorry, Andy, it only seems to be towards you. It's your involvement in the news section and someones paranoia that you're not playing fair.
Gromit - the voice of common sense - as usual.

(And 'moderation'!!)
Oh, come on! This love-fest between Gromit and a-h is a step too far.
Jackdaw33 - I don't understand your comment? Why is it too far?
I mean, what line has been crossed here? What's different here from when you post agreement with another poster?

I really don't understand what some of you want - except "your way" - whatever that may be...
Just ignore me, Ed. I suddenly got the feeling that it was them against us.
Right.

I think we're done here, but I would like AOG to feel like he can respond (without starting another thread...)

I'll close it after he's had his say, if he comes back.

I agree with you there - and I accept that there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

But I can only keep banging on the closed doors and keep reiterating that I do not edit threads that criticise me, I only remove posts that contravene Site Rules, and I try to be consistent in my views when debating.

If people want petty fights and nasty exchanges, they are simply going to have to shift their attention elsewhere - maybe they could be nasty to each other, and leave everyone else in peace!
Ed, this thread could be a decoy...and another thread already started...;-))

You do make laugh with your innocence, andy.
imo you love the petty fights, if you really don't like them how come you get involved in so many?
In the related questions below, I have just read this post from an ABEd which is worth reposting...

"Have any moderators ever been sacked?"

Not yet.

"Do they get told off if they delete perfectly good posts and threads?"

If we can't see the reason for removal we'll reinstate it. Usually we can see the reason.

"Do you keep a record of moderators actions?"

Yep, and we get email alerts when they're taken. //
