Malta for 2 week holiday

Anyone recommend Malta for a 2 week holiday in October?

went there for two weeks - exactly one year ago.

lived there as a child for three years - 40 years ago (best years of my childhood)

was wonderful to be back last year - so much had changed ... intend to go back again before i get too old.

Was back in Malta a month ago - far too hot then, but October will be perfect. Lovely country, friendly natives and loads to see and do. Transport great and very cheap. You can travel the whole island by bus. Don't miss Mdina.

I've found an apartment with sea views in St Paul's Bay. Do you know the area at all.

Is it expensive to eat out and buy food in markets etc?

Not this time excelsior, was there for a friend's ordination, but went a few years ago. Wonderful trip. Went to Gozo too which I loved. Found the prices had gone up a bit from my first visit - blamed it on the euro lol.

sound like you are very near melleiha.

north west of the island .. a good spot.

shopping is good --- restaurants are great if you want to eat out. locals go out of their way to satisfy you.

recommend spending one day travelling round the island .. you can do the whole thing in one day.

we lived in Mosta 40 years ago ... at that time the church had the largest un-supported dome in the world.

for gift and trinket buying ... ta-Qali. it was an airfield in ww2. now covered in nissan huts full of crafts people.

one day -- take the bus to valletta - historic capital .. have a ride in a karotzin (cannot remember precise spelling) .. it's a horse-drawn cab.

I hated it. dirty, smelly and almost no beaches. alright if you want to sit in the hotel bar all day, it's nothing like majorca or ibiza etc. Malta is a very small island, almost nothing green growing there, thats why the Germans couldn't firebomb it,nothing made of wood, it's all lava rock. We hired a car, and got stitched up on sunday. some religious law says that no mechinical devices should be used on sunday, so the petrol stations were shut, but the owners were standing out the front with large plastic ciontainers of fuel, selling it to holidaymakers by using a funnel and pouring it into the car tank without measuring it. and charging plenty.
The village where the movie "popeye" was filmed, by the blue lagoon, was like a derilict building site, there was human blood on the floor where one of the holidaymakers had fallen to their death from the top of the firestation ( no one in charge, no staff, just do what you want) In the "free" car park, a local saw cars coming, grabbed a hat with a un-official badge on, and said" how much do you think its worth to park here?" you decided a sum of money, paid him, and off you go. just acroos the water from the boat trip through the blue lagoon was an oil rig, not a pretty site. the only beach with sand was a few hundred metrs long, and the sand was brought in by barge. I paid for a fortnight, and we left after 10 days. Go somewhere really nice, friendly people, lovely beaches, sunsets, try portinax in Ibiza. it's away from the youngsters at san antonio, and is paradise. they filmed some of " south pacific" there because it looks like a paradise. I have been there three times, and would go again if i could. Malta, never again.

Loved Malta and Gozo, even got over to Comino. Only complaint was flew with Air Malta - never again!

Percypineapple is closest to the truth about modern day Malta. Been several times over the years but no more. Try Madeira or Sicily.

As has already been said, if you want a beach holiday the Malta isn't ideal. I personally found much of it to be very run down and a bit depressing. The historical aspects ( both ancient and more recent) are fascinating but then again so are many places in Greece and I know which I'd prefer!

People have told me you either love Malta or hate it.
We love it. Yes it looks a bit shabby and could do with a lick of paint but it's in the med and paint would just blister.
Locals are very friendly, buses are very cheap and go everywhere and lots to do and see.
In addition to the sights others have mentioned don't miss the Megalithic temples at Tarxien. Like a collection of small Stonehenges you can actually walk round and touch. There are other temples but this was the most accessible when we were there.
