Lumps in the soil

Last week when I lifted some pansies,the soil around the roots,was full of these browny,jelly-like,square lumps.I 've never seen anything like it before,and haven't managed to find them by trying...

can wood chippings ( not bought but out of a chipping machine) when put on the soil as a mulch kill conifers planted as a hedge( castlewellen type) , as 4 weeks after putting them on my hedge appears...

All my fish died

Any ideas? they were cold water fancies, they where fed once a day, 1/4 tank clean every month, had a filter, and had all the additives that should of been added. We got 6 in January, lost one a month...
