many thanks to all of you who helped. It was a gentle tap with a mallet on the pump which finally solved the problem. All radiators and hot water are back on.

I've tried turning the hot rads off, but the other rads are still cold and the pump in the airing cupboard is so hot that I can't touch it. Is this how it should be? any ideas?

thank you for your answer Beckyboo. Do you mean turn the hot radiators off and leave the heating running? or do you mean turn the hot radiators and the heating off for a while?
