what is shortening

Does anyone know what shortening is? I know it is a form of fat for cooking ,but is it Lard Margarine or butter.I have been looking at some American recipies and i'm unsure which to use.

'sugar free' sugar?

What is this 'No Sugar' stuff? The advert says it's made from sugar, yet it isn't sugar. How can this be? I'm confused. And what does it taste like? Is it as sweet as sugar? Or does it have a chemical...
