why does my corsa seem to be in high gear on starting up ,but if i switch off then restart almost straight away its ok

i am trying to replace the rear brake pads on my nissan primera w reg 2.0 s is there any special way to push back the calipers as they seem to be jammed or do i have to do something to the handbrake...
