white noise

when there is silence around me I usually hear a sort of static or white noise. can anyone explain what this is as it isn't coming from anywhere I can find?

Shmoo

just wondering - 'shmoo' has always been my favourite word. I thought I had made it up but I've heard of a band named Shmoo. Has anyone heard of shmoo as a word?
