Quality of high street fashions??

I have recently bought some (6 pairs!) trousers for work from Dorothy Perkins, and a big wooly type coat from New Look, and within the first month of buying them all I have had to sew every button...

Where did this saying come from, aparrently the police used to say it all the time.. but i can't see how. Anyone have any ideas
