What's the best way to get a permanent 12v supply from a 24v vehicle

Turning over a diesel engine

Being new to deisels. When setting valve clearances on a diesel engine do you remove the glow plugs to assist turning the engine over ? As on a petrol engine I would remove the spark plugs
