can i retract a witness statement

does any1 now wot is classed as a valid reason to retract a witness statement. i can not remember the nites events and my statment doesnt match with the other witnesses i have been tryin to retract...

i made a statement over an incedent i seen, i now wish to retract this statement as i can not remember the nites events but have been told by the officer i cant retract it just cause i cant remember...
