Why do we like hot foods which cause us pain?

My eyes are watering, and I'm wiping my sweaty forehead with the back of my hand.

I've had to slug down about half a bottle of Sauv Blanc to try to cool my mouth.

Why do we like doing this?

Serious question. I've heard some argument about endorphin release, like when you've done exercise.

Phoo, phoo ... that's me trying to suck in some cool air.

I think my tongue is on fire.

When we were in Thailand we were dining with a Thai man. He'd ordered mild food for us but he was having a more traditional meal (fish head) my OH tasted the paste that came with it and I thought he was going to die....
I've always understood that phoo-phoo, sometimes spelt with an 'f', was a twee word meaning lady-parts!
I always found cheap lager the best thing to calm the heat, and always keep some toilet rolls in the fridge.
