Why is it called going commando?

There is a rumour - as unsubstantiated on this site at least - that commandos forgo underwear under their battledress, whether for reasons of fashion, comfort or machismo, or combinations thereof, again remains a mystery. Whatever, the term was used on an episode of 'Friends' a few seasons ago, and given the huge impact of the show, it has passed into general usage.
